I. Eligibility
1. General Requirements
(1) Applicants must be physically and mentally healthy, friendly to China, have no criminal record, and be non-Chinese citizens holding a valid foreign passport;
(2) Applicants must possess a Master's degree awarded by Chinese Ministry of Education-accredited institutions.
2. Language Proficiency Requirements
(1) Chinese-taught Programs
Applicants must pass the HSK Level 6 examination (score of 180 or above); Applicants with the highest level of education taught in Chinese are exempt from providing an HSK certificate, but must provide proof of the language of instruction.
(2) English-taught Programs
Applicants whose native language is English are exempt from providing English language proficiency certificates. Applicants whose native language is not English must provide proof of English language proficiency with an IELTS score of 6.0 or above, TOEFL score of 80 or above (DI code: D310), TOEFL iBT score of 80 or above, Essentials test score of 8 or above, or equivalent English language proficiency certificates. Applicants whose native language is not English but have received their highest level of education taught in English are exempt from providing IELTS/TOEFL certificates and other proof of English proficiency, but must submit proof of the language of instruction.
(3) Korean-taught Programs
Applicants applying for “Asian-African Languages and Literature” program must pass the HSK Level 5 examination (score of 180 or above) and TOPIK level 5 for non-native Korean speakers ;
Applicants whose native language is Korean are exempt from providing Korean language certificate.
II. Application Time
Chinese Government Scholarship Program (Type B) application timeline: From now until February 16, 2024;
Shandong University Scholarship for Outstanding International Students application timeline: From now until March 1, 2024;
Self-financed student application timeline: From now until June 15, 2024.
Note: After the application deadline, supplementary materials cannot be submitted. Applicants are advised to complete their applications at least two weeks before the deadline.
III. Academic Programs
Shandong University offers doctoral programs for international students, including Chinese-taught programs and English-taught programs. Each applicant can only choose one program. In principle, students are not allowed to change the chosen program after the application deadline. For the list of doctoral programs, please refer to:

IV. Application Procedures
Applicants need to register and apply online through the SDUW Online Application System for International Students (http://apply.wh.sdu.edu.cn), fill in the application information and upload the required application documents through the system. Hard copies of application documents are not needed.
V. Application Documents
1. Personal information page of the passport (regular personal passport valid beyond October 31, 2024).
2. Undergraduate diploma/degree and master’s diploma/degree or pre-graduation certificate (the pre-graduation certificate must be stamped with the school seal, indicating the expected graduation date, and the graduation certificate must be obtained before September 2024).
3. Transcripts of all undergraduate and master courses (stamped with the school seal).
4. Two recommendation letters from professors or associate professors (or experts with equivalent professional titles) related to the applied program.
The recommendation letters should include the Referrer’s name (handwritten signature), position, institution, telephone number, and email address.
5. Letter of motivation in Chinese, English or Korean.
Applicants should follow the template provided by our university (please download the template from: https://ipo.wh.sdu.edu.cn/enistudy/info/1008/2043.htm). Applicants for Chinese-taught programs should write in Chinese, while applicants for English-taught programs should write in English, and applicants applying for Korean-taught programs should write in Korean.
6. Language proficiency certificate (the certificate should be valid, usually for a period of 2 years. If applicants provide proof of language of instruction, a school letter signed by the relevant responsible person and stamped with the school seal is required).
7. Foreigner Physical Examination Form.
Applicants should undergo the examination strictly according to the required items stated in the “Foreigner Physical Examination Form” (please download the template from: https://ipo.wh.sdu.edu.cn/enistudy/info/1008/2044.htm). Incomplete forms or forms without signature of the attending physician, hospital stamp, and stamped photo will not be accepted. Please ensure the physical examination remains valid during the application as the examination is valid for only 6 months.
8. Certificate of No Criminal Record.
Applicants must submit the Certificate of No Criminal Record issued by local public security management department. It should be valid within 6 months prior to the application date.
9. Statement of Financial Support through a Guarantor and its supporting documents (applicants who apply for the Chinese Government Scholarship and don’t accept any adjustment are exempt from these requirements), including: (1) Statement of Financial Support through a Guarantor (please download the template from: https://ipo.wh.sdu.edu.cn/enistudy/info/1008/2051.htm), which should be filled in Chinese or English; (2) Proof of sufficient funds to cover the reasonable expenses for study, living, international travel, etc. during the period of studying in China; (3) scanned copies of passport or identification document of the financial guarantor (limited to the applicant or immediate family member).
10. Applicants who meet the following criteria are required to submit the following supporting documents:
(1) For Chinese mainland, Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan residents who emigrated and acquired foreign nationality and are applying as international students, the following documents are required: (a) Certificate of annulment of Chinese nationality; (b) Certificate of annulment of household registration in China; (c) Certificate of acquiring foreign nationality;
(2) For applicants obtaining foreign nationality at birth, if either one or both parents are Chinese citizens, the following documents are required: (a) Certificate of obtaining foreign nationality at birth; (b) Permanent residence permit, passport, or identification document of the parents (one being a Chinese citizen) before the applicant's birth in a foreign country;
11. Proof of Employment (if available);
12. Table of Contents and Abstracts of Published Academic Articles (if available);
13. Additional Supplementary Materials required by Shandong University.
VI. Application Instruction
1. All uploaded documents must be in Chinese, English or Korean. If the documents are in other languages, the original document and a certified translation in English or Chinese must be uploaded together. Please use a scanner to scan the relevant documents in color, as documents taken with mobile phones or cameras, as well as photocopies, will not be accepted. Except for the "Foreigner Physical Examination Form" and personal signatures, handwritten documents will not be accepted.
2. Our university and the admissions department have the right to request some applicants to provide the original paper version/notarized documents of the application materials or authentication documents issued by designated certification agencies for further verification.
3. Due to differences in educational systems between certain countries and China, the academic requirements for applicants from these countries may vary. For more information regarding the required qualifications and degrees, please refer to the document.
4. Applicants should ensure that the application information and application materials provided are authentic and correct. Once SDUW or the certification department verifies that the information is untrue, the applicant's application, admission, or enrollment qualification will be canceled.
5. Whether applicants have the nationality of the People’s Republic of China while simultaneously possessing a foreign nationality shall be subject to the conclusion made by Exit-Entry Administration Bureau. Applicants will be disqualified if they are recognized as having Chinese nationality during their application, admission or enrollment.
VII. Examination and Admission
The university will conduct interviews and written tests according to regulations. The examination time and format will be notified separately. Admission will be based on the final grades. International students can log in to the online application system to check the admission results. Shandong University, Weihai will issue electronic admission letter and the Confirmation Form for Study in China (referred to as JW201/202 form) to the admitted students.
VIII. Registration
Admitted students must strictly follow the time specified in the admission letter to register at Shandong University, Weihai. During registration, the original copies of the graduation/degree certificate, language proficiency certificate, and other required documents will be verified. Those failing to submit the corresponding certificates will be disqualified from enrollment.
IX. Fees
1. Application fee: 400 RMB
The application is invalid for those who have not paid the application fee. Once the application fee is paid, it will be non-refundable.

3. Medical insurance fee:
According to the regulations of the Chinese Ministry of Education, international students coming to China must purchase medical insurance within China. The medical insurance fee is 800 RMB/year/person. Students who do not purchase medical insurance as required will not be allowed to complete the registration process. XI. Visa
Admitted students must bring the electronic version of the admission letter and the Confirmation Form for Study in China (JW201/202) to the Chinese Embassy or Consulate Abroad to apply for a study visa. International students studying in China for up to 6 months should apply for an X2 visa. Those studying for more than 6 months should apply for an X1 visa and apply for a residence permit within 30 days after arriving in China.
