Established in 1901, Shandong University is one of the initiative universities of modern Chinese higher education and a key comprehensive university under the direct jurisdiction of the Ministry of Education. As one of the first universities on the list of Project 211 and Project 985, Shandong University has been developing by leaps and bounds and reached an unprecedented level in recent years. Shandong University is a competitive comprehensive university which is magnificent in scale. The university comprises eight campuses in three different cities (Jinan, Qingdao and Weihai), covering an area of over 533 hectares. Its full-time student population totals above 60,000. Shandong University has one of the largest ranges of academic disciplines in China, which is representative in comprehensive universities. There are at present 12 general disciplines for undergraduates and postgraduates, namely Philosophy, Economics, Law, Education, Literature, History, Science, Engineering, Agriculture, Medicine, Management, and Fine arts. Shandong University, Weihai (SDUW) was founded in 1984 and is a campus of Shandong University. Located in the beautiful coastal city Weihai, the campus is endowed with beautiful and enchanting scenery surrounded by forests and the ocean. As a university co-built by Shandong University and Weihai municipal government, SDUW has developed to be an open and comprehensive university with a variety of disciplines. The university’s establishment has set precedence for China’s key universities running branch campuses in other cities, while its development has witnessed the glorious history of Chinese higher education’s constant reform and scientific development since the reform and opening up. In the past few decades, the university not only emphasizes on developing its featured disciplines, but also attaches great importance to its positioning as a campus open up to the Asia Pacific region while dedicating to the local economy. Over the years, the university has comprehensively improved its overall academic strength and social influence by optimizing discipline structure, promoting scientific research as well as talent cultivation.
Currently, SDUW has a student population of more than 17,000 students in total, including about 14,600 undergraduate students, 2,000 postgraduate students and 400 international students. It has over 1,200 staff members, including 379 professors and associate professors, and 422 postgraduate students’ supervisors. The construction area of the campus is nearly 500,000 square meters.
At present, there are 12 schools and one teaching department at SDUW, offering 46 Bachelor’s Degree programs spanning 8 general disciplines, namely, Literature, Art, Law, Economics, Management, Science, Engineering and Medicine. The university can recruit postgraduate students in 25 first-level disciplines, doctoral students in 20 first-level disciplines, and post-doctoral students in 17 first-level disciplines, forming a multi-level educational system to cultivate doctoral students, postgraduate students, undergraduate students and international students.
Over the years, Shandong University, Weihai has established a broad international network for educational cooperation and has established cooperative relations with 119 well-known universities in 15 countries and regions, namely Australia, the U.S., the U.K., France, Germany, Italy, The Republic of Korea, Japan, Spain, Russia, Sweden, Canada, New Zealand, Singapore as well as Taiwan region of China.
SDUW has always attached great importance to students’ innovative spirits and practical skills, and it has been promoting “Four Experiences” among the students, namely, SDUW Study Experiences, Overseas Study Experiences, Second Campus Study Experiences, and Social Practice Experiences. Overseas learning experiences can be realized by six-month or one-year study abroad programs, “1+2+1” or “2+2” dual bachelor degree programs, “3+1+1” bachelor-master package programs as well as short-term summer programs at its partner universities. Furthermore, SDUW has established President’s Scholarships to provide the students with financial support. Since 2003, SDUW has sent almost 5,000 students to study overseas, and the number of students sent each year has been increasing steadily.
